Alright, let’s talk about this little project I recently finished, a remake of the Patek Philippe Gondolo 4962/200R-001. To be honest, I got interested in this one because I heard the name “Gondolo” came from a retailer in Rio de Janeiro, Gondolo & Labouriau, which I thought was pretty interesting.
First off, I started by looking at the details. The reference number tells you everything about the watch, like the model and features. But each watch also has a serial number, which makes it unique and helps with its individual production details. That is why I noted down both serial numbers and reference numbers. I thought I needed to learn this before I started.
So, I dug into the details of the original 4962/200R-001. This watch, it’s something else. I noticed it’s got this Art Deco vibe and the craftsmanship is just top-notch. The case is 18k rose gold, all curved and it looks really neat, and the bezel is pretty unique.
I began the remake process. And I chose a similar 18k rose gold material for the case, because, let’s face it, you gotta stick with the basics. I worked on getting that curved shape right – it’s not as easy as it looks. The bezel was another challenge, it’s quite intricate.

After a lot of trial and error, I finally got the look I wanted. It’s not an exact replica, but it captures the spirit of the original Gondolo, especially with that classic style. This whole project, it was a real learning experience. I messed up a few times, sure, but I learned a ton about watchmaking. It’s way harder than it looks.
Anyway, I am pretty happy with how it turned out. It’s a piece that really stands out, not just for its looks but also for what it represents – a nod to the history and the artistry of those old-school Patek Philippe watches. It’s been a fun ride, and I am already thinking about what to tackle next.

I also learned that the Gondolo Serata, which is a type of jewelry watch, is back in the Patek Philippe collection. It’s known for its style and elegance. I might try my hand at one of those next. Who knows?
