Okay, so I’ve been wanting to remake this Prada Galleria Saffiano Leather Bag, the large one, for a while now. You know, the one you see in all the specialty stores? Yeah, that’s the one. I finally decided, “You know what? Let’s do this!”

First thing I did was I started looking around online, just trying to get a good feel for the bag. I mean, I’ve seen it in person a bunch of times, but I wanted to really study it, you know? I spent hours just looking at pictures, especially of that Saffiano leather. It’s kind of Prada’s thing, their iconic material, as I saw someone call it. It has this unique cross-hatch texture, and I knew getting that right was gonna be key. I looked at a bunch of pictures online, and found many pictures that mentioned the words “Prada” and “Made in Italy”.

Then, I started thinking about the size. I wanted to make the large version, so I was trying to find the dimensions everywhere. I looked for bags that were similar, like this Le Pliage XL thing, trying to visualize how big mine would be. I also saw a bunch of stuff about how to tell if a Prada bag is real or not. Apparently, the newer ones have “Prada” on the first line and “Made in Italy” on the second line of the brand stamp. Good to know, I guess, but not super helpful for what I was doing.

Next, I hit up some local fabric and leather stores. I was on a mission to find the perfect leather. I knew I needed something that could mimic that Saffiano texture. I touched so many different leathers, guys, you wouldn’t believe it. I even found some that looked pretty close, but they just didn’t feel quite right. I kept searching, determined to find the perfect match.

  • I spent hours and hours just looking at pictures online.
  • Started to find out the bag’s size by searching for similar bags.
  • Checked the local fabric and leather stores for the perfect leather.

After that, I started working on the pattern. This took a while because I was basically drafting it from scratch, just based on the pictures I had. I used some cardboard to make a rough prototype, just to get a feel for the shape and the size. It wasn’t pretty, but it gave me a good starting point. I really wanted to capture that “sleek, elegant allure” that the original bag has.

Then came the cutting and sewing. Let me tell you, working with leather is no joke! It’s tough, and you really have to take your time. I made a few mistakes along the way, but I learned from them. I had to unpick some seams and redo them, but hey, that’s part of the process, right?

The Hard Part

The hardest part was probably getting that triangle logo thing right. I saw online it’s called a “leather triangle illuminated by the lettering logo”. Fancy, right? Anyway, I ended up hand-stitching it, which took forever, but I think it turned out pretty good. It’s those little details that really make a difference.

Finally, after many days of work, my Prada-inspired bag was finished! It’s not exactly like the original, of course, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. It’s got that same “sleek lines” vibe, and the leather, while not actual Saffiano, has a pretty nice texture to it. I even managed to get the inside pretty close to the real thing, with all the little pockets and compartments.

It was a lot of work, but it was totally worth it. I learned a ton about working with leather and about bag construction in general. Plus, now I have a pretty cool bag that I made myself! Who knows, maybe I’ll try making another one someday. But for now, I’m just gonna enjoy carrying this one around.
