Remake Patek Philippe PP Calatrava 5227J-001 Original Order: Is It Worth the Price?

Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with watches lately, and let me tell you, it’s a whole different world. Today, I tried to remake a Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J-001. Sounds fancy, right? Well, it kinda is, but my version? Not so much, but that was a given since I’m not a master watchmaker.

First off, I started by gathering all the materials. I found this cheap 39mm yellow gold-colored case online. It’s not real gold, obviously, but it looks the part from a distance. Then, I needed a dial. I opted for an ivory-colored one because it seemed pretty close to the original champagne dial. I also grabbed a brown alligator-style strap, just like the real deal.

Next up, I tried to put it all together. I used some basic tools I had lying around, nothing too professional. The case opened up pretty easily, and I carefully placed the dial inside. It wasn’t a perfect fit, but I managed to secure it with a bit of effort. I noticed the index alignment was off, especially the 12, but what can you do on a budget?

  • Open the case.
  • Place the dial inside.
  • Secure the dial.
  • Attach the strap.

Then came the strap. I attached it to the case, which was surprisingly the easiest part. It just clicked into place. I also looked for a movement, and I just used a standard quartz one I had from an old watch. It’s definitely not a 324 S C caliber, but it tells the time, and that’s good enough for me.

After I assembled everything, I stepped back to admire my work. It’s no Patek Philippe, but it does resemble one. The whole thing cost me way less than the real deal. I saw online that the original goes for around $38,000 to $498. Mine? Let’s just say it was a fraction of that.

Here are some specs of the watch I made:

  • Case: 39mm, yellow gold-colored
  • Dial: Ivory-colored
  • Strap: Brown, alligator-style
  • Movement: Quartz (not 324 S C)
  • Thickness: About 8.53 mm (eyeballed it, really)
  • Water-resistant: Nope, not even a little bit. I wouldn’t get this thing wet.

Final Thoughts

So, yeah, that’s my little project. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but I had fun making it. Plus, I learned a lot about watches in the process. It’s not something I’d wear to a fancy dinner, but it’s a cool little piece to have. And hey, it’s a conversation starter, if nothing else. Would I do it again? Maybe. It was a fun little experiment, but next time, I might aim for something a bit more… within my skill level. Hope you all enjoyed this little journey of mine!
